allgemein ein bisschen langweilig
Totaler Fake, aggressiv vermarktet, Finger weg
Schade.
I would divide my rating in two parts: 4 stars for the story and 2 starts for the writing style, which leads to an average of 3 starts. You can read below a bit more extensive explanation.'Individutopia' is overall an enjoyable and quick read which will make you think about what we are currently doing and how we are acting in our society. Set in 2084, this book aims at portraying a rather damaged society (or, better said, no society at all), where people ended up being so focused on the indicidualistic that they no longer even perceived the exsistence of the other people. The idea that we actually might be headed there: with all of our increasing social-media presence and communiciation-in-person absence; with all the encouragements from media about self-development, self-discovery and self-improvement, is scary in a way, but this is exactly the point which I think the author is trying to make. He created a literary world where people are inhaling anti-depressants and thus are oblivious to the fact that they are deeply miserable, or that they lack social interactions. He also talks about how the job sector has changed: employment contracts were gradually becoming shorter and shorter, so eventually people had to seek for a job on an hourly basis and most of the times, this job would be as pointless as the people's existence. People's friends are avatars and the only purpose or entertainment they find in theirs lives is participation in some utterly pointless competitions where you can see your score on your gadgets, but never meet your opponents in real life. Thus, as a story line and idea, the book was intriguing and thought provoking and I liked this aspect very much. However, when it comes to the narration, the writing style or the timeline of events, I found the book to be sloppy. The language at times was forced and rather artificial, while some of the descriptions were portrayed rather unclearly. The author refers to the main character often as "our friend", which I somehow found very annoying. I also felt that he could have done better job at trying to depict the exact pychological and intelectual state of Renee, especially when she experienced crutial realizations or transformations. After all - these are the milestones in the narration and we can only empathize with Renee or be affected by the thought of such a future only if we can truthfully imagine what the changes she has endured and the challenges she has overcome were. Instead, the author has quickly written a page or two about what she was thinking or feeling, often with such exaggeration and wish for a dramatic effect that it felt almost fake. Thus, I think I would have enjoyed the book much more if the author used more down-to-earth, unforced writing style which to the reader feels as natural and as effortless as an everday conversation, because, at least for me, with the narration as it was in the book, the nice story idea was largly derogated by the writing style.
Individutopia is the second book by Joss Sheldon I've read after Occupied. Both constantly made me shake my head in wonder and awe. I've been an avid reader for more than 50 years; speculative fiction and especially dystopia has always got me. But honestly: I've hardly read anything like these two books before. Sure, they follow a tradition. And Mr. Sheldon can rightfully be called the new George Orwell. He takes the issues of our times and bloats, distorts, caricatures them in a way that may make you chuckle but choke you at the same time. And even though you might call this a satire, I strongly believe that a society like the one Renee lives in is plausible. The author calls it a warning. We'd better heed it.
Man fühlt sich wie auf QVC, egal bei welcher Suche, IMMER IMMER IMMER wird dieses Buch als TREFFER angezeigt. ich wills nicht haben, lasst mich damit in Ruhe
